Abstract

Taking as a case study the novel by Saphia Azzeddine, La Mecque-Phuket (2010), the article proposes some considerations on the translation of the narrative representation of the interlanguage used by Maghrebi immigrants. The aim is to show which translation strategies can be implemented when having to render a French language typical of “weak locutors,” also considering the risks the translator runs in reproducing a language that could be perceived as caricatural or offensive. The theoretical framework required for the analysis takes into account not only studies on interlanguage, but also essays on narrative representation and the specificity of post-migration literature, emphasizing the significance of poetic aspects. More generally, the article is placed in the domain of postcolonial studies.
