This article frames and interprets the historical evolution of Communist anti-Europeanism between the mid-forties and early seventies. During this period, the PCI’s opposition to European integration changes its sign, passing from a typically internationalist approach aimed at preventing the construction of a geopolitical bloc against the USSR, to one aimed at defending the national entrepreneurial and productive fabric. The critique of European integration in the national political debate from the 1950s to the populist movements of the 21st century provides the reference framework for the reconstruction of the not always linear evolution of the PCI’s positioning and suggests that a certain critique of Europeanism is configured as a vector of more general political positions.
