n this article, the author analyzes Stein's conception of personal development that occurs from a nucleus, a personal core. Stein identifies this nucleus in phenomenologica writings, as a personal structure, synonymous with his own individuality, constituted by the self of the soul. The concept of a nucleus will be developed in a later stage of his thought in which he elaborates an ontology in an anthropological key. The nucleus informs the soul and the body during the process. Unlike Thomas Aquinas, individuality is not given by the body (matter); but by the «form», from within. Development comprises the totality of the person, both interiority and exteriority. However, it will be in the personal and unique relationship of the human being with the divine being, where the nucleus, understood as the «essence of the soul», will be fully opened and will know that specific image or «qualitative mark» that is his. The full disclosure of the nucleus would be in the capacity to love God and to love one's fellow-beings.
