This article examines the changes in the field of security that have occurred as a consequence of the pandemic linked to COVID-19, with particular reference to the new requirements that have arisen, to the changes in policies and operational plans and to the risk perception by the population. Faced with a decrease in crime rates referred to specific criminal offences, as a consequence of travel restrictions enforced by Prime Ministerial Decrees, issued by the Government to counter the emergency, and by the increase number of controls by the Police Forces, the private security sector, in Italy, has faced a change of direction in the nature of provided services, moving from an almost exclusive employment in security activities to an orientation that see safety as a new focus on which to draw attention. In this new perspective, which sees the security sector engaged on the front line in the fight against COVID-19, it is possible to more effectively apply interventions and security methodologies to combat the pandemic by operating according to two different strategies: on one hand, considering safety from a systemic point of view, that is as the integration between human factor, tools and procedures. On the other hand, conceiving safety from an innovative point of view, that is not only as a simple protection of properties and people, but also as a real factor of qualitative progress.
