This paper proposes a typology of the main individual actors involved in the industrialization process of Jalisco (a State in Western Mexico) during the 19th century. It also suggests that the typology could be useful for comparisons with other areas of study inside and outside Mexico. One characteristic of Jalisco's industrialization was a lack of an industrialist vision. This type of individual was scarce in Jalisco during the period of study. At the beginning, attitudes towards industrialization as an economic opportunity were very reserved in Jalisco. This eventually changed as those actors established contacts with immigrants from Europe and other parts of the Americas. Some individuals invested their capital in productive processes, but few of them were driven by an industrialist vision. This paper also examines when the industrialization process took place in Jalisco and how its actors’ behaviors affected this outcome.
