Background: Andrographis paniculata (AP) is a plant used in traditional medicines worldwide for its medicinal properties, and for liver disorders. Despite numerous studies on its efficacy, the precise mode of action responsible for its hepatoprotective potential remains unclear. Methods: In this review, traditional uses, bioactive compounds, and pharmacological activity of AP for hepatoprotection were investigated using ten databases and keywords such as Andrographis paniculata, Hepatoprotection of AP, and AP in liver disorders and results between 2000 and 2023. Results: The review found that AP has the potential to treat liver disorders, including cancer, and established its anti-inflammatory, antitumor, anti-fibrotic, antiviral potential, and hepatic protection activity through experimental and clinical studies. The review also discussed its safety aspects. Conclusion: AP can potentially treat liver disorders and the findings highlight the need for further research to elucidate the mode of action responsible for AP's hepatoprotective potential and validate its rational use in liver disorders.
