The goal of this study is to identify the main factors responsible for criminality in the southeast region of Brazil. To this end, a panel data structure was set up to monitor the evolution of crime in the southeast microregions. Global and local spatial auto-correlation tests were carried out together with the estimation of econometric spatial panel models. The results pointed to the existence of spatial dependence on crime rates in all the analyzed years. It was found that population density, GDP per capita, unemployment rate, and proportion of young people have a positive impact on homicide rates, which is relevant to understanding the phenomenon of crime.
