José Agustín Goytisolo and Jorge Luis Borges: the truth in the poem
Abstract
Jorge Luis Borges and José Agustín Goytisolo. They were different. They also expressed a dissimilar ideology. But they conceived an alike construction of their personal voices oscillating between the universal and the intimate. We can find several points in common: an elegiac and celebratory tone, a particular sense of irony, a cult towards the mother and respect for the father. They shared the same passion for History, Classics and Philosophy. Their interest in other cultures demonstrates a vocation for universality. Above all else, they considered themselves as readers. In the worlds they created, doubt was the previous step for knowledge. They turned their environments into Literature and the truth in the poem took priority over their work as writers. On this aspect, Borges suggested: “What is lost by obscurity and the look transforms”.
