The policies implemented in Vietnam since independence have had a positive effect on school enrolment: the country today is very close to universal primary education. However, schooling inequalities have tended to rise while the responsibility regarding schooling tended to be rejected on families. This article offers a typology of the responses poor families bring to the primary schooling imperative, showing that these families tend to react to the constraints they are subjected to rather than make choices, and that their schooling behaviors essentially come down to the way they try to loosen their constraints.
