Principles and methods of classification and coding for spatial features of underground mine were expounded for visual management and control system for underground mine production. Classification of various underground mining business units was made by linear classification method as well as geometric solids of spatial features concerning underground mine. A ternary and an octal code, with the latter including the former, were designed respectively for the business units and spatial features. Atomic action and functional action based classification method was proposed, and faceted classification method was applied in classification of feature action and attributes. Corresponding character coding was formulated. The classification and coding methods have been verified in visual management and control system for underground mining production. The results show that the methods can provide technical support for acquisition, storage, inquiry, analysis and exchange of spatial information as well as real-time simulation of equipment and personnel activities.
