Abstract | Full Text

This article focuses on a specific research field within French Media Studies, that is to say gender and media studies. We aim at emphasizing the different steps that led to the emergence of this scientific field. We rely on founding publications on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. We can distinguish four different steps. First, feminist criticism denounced the image of women in the media. Secondly, efforts of conceptualization relied on an ideological analysis of the media. Then, Cultural Studies questioned this previous textual determinism by focusing on audiences and reception. Our last part deals with the notion of « technology of gender », an approach which illustrates the richness of this heritage.
