We intend to revisit the place of the literary text in the teaching of foreign languages (or other). Such intent is anchored in the need of not establishing any dissociation between the two main basic axes of the Letters professional: Language and Literature. We bring reflections that we believe necessary for the formation of this professional, since working with both language and literature is a delicate and indispensable task, especially for the teacher of the area. Therefore, we will discuss the importance of the relationship between language and literature, from studies of linguistic variation in the teaching of Spanish in Brazil, placing emphasis on literature, the main reference point for such considerations. First, we discuss the linguistic variation in the teaching of Spanish, starting from a bibliographical research based on Moreno Fernández, (2010), Vilhena (2013), Andión Herrero (2008) and Lucchesi (2004) and a documental research based on the National Curriculum Guidelines for Secondary Education (2006). Anchored in the studies of Preti (2004) on linguistic variation in literary texts and Brait (2000; 2010), we will discuss the importance of working with literary texts in the teaching of Spanish. At the end, we will draw out some considerations which emphasize the feasibility of an approach to literary texts in language classes without dichotomizing them.
