Abstract
Background. This study aims to determine the effect of off-job training and employee performance at Iganga Municipal Council. Methodology. The study employed a cross-sectional, correlational, and descriptive design. Further, it used both qualitative and quantitative approaches hence a mixed research. 47 respondents were selected from a population of 54 participants. The researcher used purposive and simple random sampling when choosing the respondents. The researcher used both primary and secondary data. Primary data was collected through questionnaires and interviews. Secondary data was collected from journal articles, reports, newspapers, magazines, and government documents. Results. According to the findings, the majority of the respondents agree that off-job training guides new employees on policies of the Municipal Council resulting in the accuracy of employee results. Findings showed that off-job training through seminars, conferences, and workshops broadens the knowledge of performing tasks leading to efficiency. Off-job training motivates employees to commit to the organization and perform tasks diligently. Findings showed that taking up new courses at university employees does not create backlogs in offices as employees spend significant time revising and reading. The findings showed that employee performance was 26.2% predicted by off-job training and the remaining 73.8% was predicted by other ways of employee training and the model was valid at 95%. Conclusion. The correlation between off-job training and employee performance was 0.478 at Iganga Municipal Council. Therefore, there was a significant positive relationship between off-job training and employee performance in Iganga Municipal Council. Recommendation. The Municipal Council should provide career development opportunities to employees which will enable employees to learn new skills and improve employee performance. The Municipal Council should also provide necessary training and development opportunities to its employees to enhance their skills and become up-to-date on changes in the employment market.
