From fights for participation to future projects: analysis of the construction of the claims of indigenous women from Roraima in the Brazilian Amazon
Abstract
This article proposes an analysis on the demands and claims of the indigenous women's movement in Roraima based on debates by the Organization of Indigenous Women of Roraima (OMIR). Through a process of struggle and empowerment, indigenous women in Roraima have gained recognition and the ability to participate in their base communities and state organizations. First, by questioning their role in meetings and assemblies, then by demanding a seat at the table. This article will analyze their claims and demands demonstrating how these reveal their ideals, concerns and needs as the women struggle to gain rights — both social and as citizens. Furthermore, this article will explore the theoretical framework of indigenous movements and feminism mediated by lens of building ethnic identity and life experiences within indigenous communities. This provides a unique perspective by which to understand the struggles and historical constructs of indigenous people in the Amazon.
