Analysis of clinical trials carried out by U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command based on ClinicalTrials.gov data

Abstract

Objective To analyze the clinical trials carried out by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) to understand the general trends of US military medical researches. Methods We retrieved the data of the clinical researches sponsored or participated by the USAMRMC from ClinicalTrials.gov and analyzed the data in terms of the subject words, research contents, progress, clinical stages, task allocation and geographical distribution of the clinical registers. Results The USAMRMC focuses on researches of infectious diseases, trauma and nervous system diseases, and invested heavily on the development of vaccines, drugs and medical equipment. About 57.7% of the clinical researches sponsored or participated by the USAMRMC have been completed and the results have been published; 77.9% of the studies were carried out by the local institutions in the USA, and the military medical institutions participated directly in 43.1% of the studies. Conclusion Relying on the local institutions and efficient military-civilian cooperations, the USAMRMC has carried out considerable work in pre-clinical and clinical studies. The practice of the USAMRMC suggests the importance of studies for prevention and treatment of regional diseases and of the collaborative innovation of key technologies between the civilian and military institutions.
