The issue of reviving the identity of the Old Tatar Quarter architecture in Kazan

Abstract

The problem of reviving the identity of the architecture of the Old Tatar Quarter is relevant and requires a solution, because it constitutes a part of preserving the identity of Kazan, and that affects the sustainability of the city as a whole. To tackle the specified issue, it is necessary to elicit the identity codes (identifiers) of the quarter and its building environment in the early 20th century, determine the lost buildings in the period of the 20th – early 21st centuries and the possible ways of their reconstruction. The significance of the results is that the necessary condition for revival of the identity of the Old Tatar Quarter architecture is the conservation and restoration of urban planning, ethnic, architectural and historical, functional, mental and event identity codes.
