The historical data on the development of medicine as a science, with an emphasis on aspects of the endocrinology, are given in this paper. The role of Ukrainian and foreign scientists and their contribution to the development of the chemistry of hormones has been clarified in a historical context. The role of schools, academies in shaping the outlook of future scientists and the promotion of best practices is shown. The article shows how the knowledge of medicine was gradually accumulated: clinical manifestations, definition of laboratory differences. The ability to provide pathogenetic treatment to the patient with endocrine disease was possible in most cases only after the industrial synthesis of hormones. The works of many scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology. The definition of “hormone”, classification, place of biosynthesis, particularly of the secretion, the industrial synthesis of some of them and the scope of use are presented. Special attention is paid to the description of new methods of synthesis of thyroxine, flutapharm and other substances.
