Two main north-south land routes, which ran from Tangier to Sala/Rabat on the coast on the one hand, and Volubilis in the interior on the other, are attested in Tingitane by the Antonine Itinerary, which provides a list of stations for the Roman province of Tingitane, along with the distances that separate them. But, apart from rare sections, these have not always been located on the ground with certainty because, unlike other regions of the Roman Empire, the roads of Tingitane were not paved or marked by milestones. Since the XIXth century, archaeological surveys carried out within the limits of the Roman province of Tingitane Mauritania have mapped a large number of sites )urban, rural, military...( from different phases of the ancient period )Mauritanian, Roman or post-Roman( which suggest a dense but ephemeral road network along the borders and inlands that complements the river and maritime network.
