– Taking as starting point the evidence of the modest participation of Portugal in emblematic at the time of the great development of that genre throughout Europe, especially in relation to emblem books, notwithstanding the undeniable influence exerted by foreign emblematic works upon Portuguese authors, the present article tries to carry out a survey of the titles produced in that country, original and in translation, both printed and manuscript, as well as of the secondary literature regarding them, and points out as the original and relevant Portuguese contribution to emblematics the use of emblem motifs in glazed tile panels, of which it seeks also to draw up an inventory.
