Related with the studies of second language acquisition, this study explores the written lexical availability in learners of Spanish as second language (SSL) at the beginning of their immersion period in Santiago, Chile. We consider the sociolinguistic factor of sex from a quantitative perspective. The linguistic factor of the mother tongue, and the cognitive factor of their proficiency in L2, were both considered from a descriptive point of view. To meet this goal, the available lexicon was identified in a written corpus, and it was quantified and correlated with the gender external variable. It was also considered some level of influence of the L1 in the employment of the available lexicon, and the proficiency in SSL. To relate the lexicon with the proficiency in L2 we used the notions of the lexical inventory of the Cervantes Institute. The results show the need of advanced learners to review the semantics fields of the intermediate level, because their intake counts basically with the items of the more basic ones.
