In Byzantine and western sources of the 13th and early 14th centuries we come across three similar toponyms: the Byzantine bishopric of (ta) Stēlaria, the Latin bishopric of Destillaria (De Stillaria) and a town of Estilar. Until now, the Latin bishopric has tentatively been identified with the well-known Byzantine archbishopric of Proikonnēsos on the homonymous island (today Marmara Adası). The town of Estilar and the bishopric of (ta) Stēlaria were located on the peninsula of Stylarion (Karaburun Yarımadası, west of İzmir). In this article it is argued that the three toponyms refer to the same place, namely the Byzantine archbishopric of Proikonnēsos (today the town of Marmara on the homonymous island).
