Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is a prime example of the standardized travelling models that circulate internationally. By referring to work on travelling models, this article engages with the concepts of (de)territorialization/(re)territorialization and the “revenge of contexts.” It examines the journey of IWRM to Burkina Faso, which has been described as a success story due to institutional mimicry. However, while the institutional mechanisms may comply with the principles of the model, the local operationalization has been met with resistance, a symbol of territorial revenge. The conflicts documented reflect the lack of support among the population for this institutional IWRM: it has marginalized pre-IWRM rules, which were structuring elements of water management for local territories.
