This article argues that the various editions of the Book of Disquiet represent some defacement. The editor makes decisions that the writer did not take on textual variables and selection of fragments. In modernity the "book" emerges as a utopian horizon. Pessoa's writing is not finished and, therefore, remains open to interpretation. Also, I'll try to show how mediation (interpretation) upon a text is reflected in graphic elements that create meaning. The writing process goes through various stages from the initial inscription of letters on paper to the moment of publication in whatever format. A digital edition can be conceived as a way to show that writing is based on a selection process.
