This article studies literature in Godard’s early films (1960-1967). The first purpose of the article is to underline how Godard prefers rewriting instead of adaptation and the importance of the literary quotations in his films, which can be compared to the literary technique of èkphrasis and determines the interrupted technique of editing, that is typically modern. Furthermore, the article studies how Godard makes literary culture a central theme of his cinema to reveal the contradictions of modern society and the condition of women, and denounce the destruction of language and the disregard of the literary tradition, both violated by the ruling class.
