Management of Periapical Lesions due to Foreign Body Reaction: A Case Report

Background and purpose: Foreign bodies may be deposited in the periapical tissues either by traumatic injury or iatrogenically. The presence of an external object in the periapical tissue by creating a foreign body reaction can lead to endodontic failure. This article describes the treatment of an unusual impaction of three foreign bodies into the periapical tissues. Case report: Three foreign bodies in periapical space of an adolescent was accidentally detected. He had trauma history in the anterior teeth. Non-surgical and surgical treatment was performed. After two years follow up, clinical signs showed improvements and the bone was repaired. Conclusion: Foreign body reaction in the periapical tissue and the delay in its detection cause extensive destruction of the bony structure. Therefore, surgical treatment for their fast removal is necessary.
