Caucasian (Eastern) Front, the first front opened upon the Ottoman Empire’s entering the First World War, witnessed severe battles. In the battles that began in December 1914, thousands of Turkish soldiers were lost in the action or by freezing because of the extremely cold weather or were put out of action as wounded or sick. In 1917, a survey on their family structure was implemented to the soldiers of the 3rd Army, who were born between 1869 and 1898 - in other words, between 19 and 48 years old. The survey consisted of thirty-three questions in the left column. Those questions can be classified roughly under 9 general topics, or more specific sub-domains. The first main topic was about the marital status of the soldiers and the sub-domains were “whether soldiers were married or not”, “if yes, how many times they got married”, “whether their wives were dead or alive” or “whether they were divorced or not”. The second main topic aims to identify soldiers between 15 and 35 years who had children. The sub-domains are intended to describe the ratio of the soldiers who had children in the abovementioned age range. The third main domain is about the number of the soldiers whose children were alive and aims to identify the number of their children; 1 to 4 or more than 4. Some of the provinces which were recorded in the forms of the soldiers included in the survey are Sivas, Ankara, Erzurum, Samsun, Trabzon, Konya, Adana, Kayseri, İzmir, Giresun, Ordu, Tokat, Amasya, Van, Diyarbakır, Halep, Kastamonu, Bursa, Harput (Elazığ), İstanbul, Musul, Edirne, Bitlis, Kayseri, Adana, etc. Most of the subdistricts which were put in the forms without mentioning the province are from Black Sea Region. Some of the subdistricts are Fatsa, Ünye, Çarşamba, Tirebolu, Of, Hopa, Erbaa, Vakfıkebir, Alucra, İskilip, Develi, Zile, İspir, Akçaabat, etc.
