The quest for the perfect body aesthetically and lack of a healthy body has led people to use improperly, substances that may potentiate the shortest time possible to your wishes. The aim of this work was to verify the consumption of dietary supplements and check the self-perception of body builders in many academies of Palmeira das Missões – state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The instrument used was a questionnaire containing 17 multiple-choice and descriptive questions regarding the personal profile of who attend the academies. The questionnaire also contained a tool for assessment of body image perception. We evaluated 56 bodybuilders of both sexes, 77% (n = 43) men and 23% (n = 13) women. About the self-perception, it was found that, among men 70% (n = 30) showed dissatisfaction with their image, while in females this figure was 77% (n = 10). Sources of prescription dietary supplements are not done by a trained professional. For men, the greatest source of prescription supplements was recommended by friends (41.86%), the gym teacher (51.16%) and self indication (23.25%). For women, the prescription was taken by gym teacher (76.92%), followed by the sellers (15.38%) and friends (15.38%).The results presented here reveal that the consumption of dietary supplements by body builders are increasingly evident, stimulated by market appeal and not professionally trained.
