This essay reflects on the use of a pseudonym by female authors whose work and relationship with the media express a resistance to the obligation to appear publicly. Elena Ferrante and Nelly Arcan play on the border between fiction and autobiography in order to escape their readers as well as critics and journalists. They stage an aesthetic and political “death of the author” that is a resistance against the tendency to objectify and consume female authors.
