The organization of engineering education in Italy is discussed, considering also the changes which are being introduced as a result of recent law; in this country, in fact, all university curricula are subject to state laws. The new law gives greater autonomy to the universities and enables them to provide more specialized curricula by means of the institution of two new degree courses: in information engineering (i.e. computer engineering), and telecommunications engineering. Throughout the paper special attention has been given to control engineering education. In order to provide a more complete picture of the situation, in the first section the organization of the Italian educational system is briefly described.
