The modern era is characterized by a continuous and an evolving pluralism in terms of genres, in all forms of art. This pluralism is particularly noticeable in cinema, where - due to the technological progress - it creates new genres or leads to the evolution of sub-genres. A browse of the imdb website, reveals that every movie is categorized into more than one genre. This is also reflected in the Film Genre Theory and the Film Archives. The present approach attempts to highlight the multifaceted field of genres in fictional films, by utilizing the Semiology and Narrative Theory, both from a literary perspective, as well as from the perspective of film studies. The main objective is to point out those aspects of narrativity that interact with signs and meanings, especially those that contribute to the distinction of film genres as well as to the identification of their main features, especially those that lead to the understanding of the sub-genres. In this respect, the present approach is being focused on the Sémantique Structurale by Algirdas Greimas, in the way it can be revealingly and decisively combined with the contemporary film genre theories.
