Effect of organic impurity in additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V
Abstract
In this study, the influences of organic impurities on the additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V material were analyzed. For this purpose, common foreign particles, as they can occur along the powder process chain, were inserted into the selective laser melting process. Due to the process influences, the inserted foreign particles were partially ablated by laser input or gas flow. The particles which remained in the final printed specimen's microstructure were analyzed using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed the influence of organic impurities in the Ti-6Al-4V structure. A new phase was formed, which can be distinguished from the surrounding martensitic titanium structure by its own structure and morphology.
