This article identifies the key aspects and the position of ecological innovations in the economy and the economic policy system in Slovakia. The ambition is not to provide an exhaustive picture but to identify and descriptively analyse the key contexts, frameworks and actors. In the first part, we briefly deal with theoretical issues of eco-innovation and in the second part we select indicators which explain the state of the environment in both Slovakia and the European Union (EU). These are the contextual factors which determine the development of eco-innovation. The third part of this research is based on standard metrics, whereby we analyse the state and development of eco-innovation in Slovakia. Here, we concentrate, in particular, on eco-innovation oriented R&D expenditure and patents, and the final part of the paper is devoted to current aspects of EU eco-innovation policy and the intended objectives and tools for eco-innovation policy in Slovakia.
