Coccoliths are generally underused in palaeo-reconstructions due to unknown vital effects, which complicate their isotopic signatures. Here, the authors develop a cellular model of carbon isotopic fluxes calibrated byin vivoexperiments and shed light on the vital effects that undermine coccolith utility.
