APPLICATION OF THE THEORY OF PEPLAU TO THE HOME CARE OF A PATIENT WITH AIDS

Abstract

This is a case study about a patient with AIDS, recently admitted to the home-care program of the University Hospital of the Federal University of Pernambuco for continuation of his treatment. The objective of this study is to describe an application of the nursing process in the area of home-care based on the Interpersonal Relations Theory of Peplau. Taxonomy I of the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) was used as a framework for portraying patient reponses regarding his lived health situation. Seven domiciliary visits were made during which data were gathered through systematic observation and a semi-structured interview with an emphasis on basic human needs. Three NANDA nursing diagnoses (Risk for Infection; Fluid Volume Deficit; and Situational Low Self Esteem) were identified for which interventions were planned and implemented.
