Account of the Spanish conscription contributions to adult education during the second half of the 20™ century. It will be emphasized that this role began well before 1950, went along through the fifties and changed its aims and methods when francoist Spain sought swift development in the early sixties. The basic literacy of draftees was extended to provide them with primary education and this same task, named Armed Forces Cultural Extension Program, was later recycled and renovated by the advanced adult education policy of the Transition governments. The study will also pay attention to the intensive professional training courses developed in barracks, supported by the Ministry of Labour during the sixties, and those later organized by the Ministry of Defence to fulfill civilian life employment demands of professional soldiers.
