Abstract

Ornaments are metal-made jewels that women wear on their various limbs for beauty. In ancient times, ornaments were made by piercing naturally available seeds and tying them with thin ropes. Later, as civilization developed, various materials were used to make ornaments. Materials like gold, pearls, and coral gained importance in the production of ornaments. Women mostly wear these luxurious accessories for beauty. However, social values and various types of beliefs also form the reasons for wearing ornaments in many cultures. Ornaments have a prominent place in Tamil culture and aesthetics. The making and wearing of ornaments has been an important part of Tamil culture since ancient times. Gold, silver, bronze and precious stones like diamond, emerald, ruby, blue, pearl and coral are the precious materials that have been used by the Tamils in the Sangam times. This research article decodes the various kinds of ornaments worn by Sangam women as evidenced in Sangam literature.
