The article is devoted to the problem of development of a tool for the empirical research of the characteristics of consciousness’ modernisation / counter-modernisation in the sphere of religions. The author comes to the conclusion that in traditional Ukrainian religions there are counter-modern mental programs, which are responsible for curtailing of certain types of financial-economic and cultural-spiritual activity. These programs block certain strategies of this activity that would contribute to the development of capitalist relations. At the same time, as a hypothesis that will find highly probable confirmation, the following thesis has been proven by the author that the predominantly counter-modernisation mood of Orthodoxy, due to the inscription of the latter into the cultural system of traditional society, presupposes the recreation of a sustainable way of life and practically minimises risky strategies for profit and professional self-affirmation with an expected decline in the standard of living. Developing the system of indicators, the author has the idea of the cultural-institutional inertia of Orthodoxy and Catholicism in Ukraine in relation to modernisation and bourgeois values. It has also been stressed in the article that the resistance of the Protestant model in its economic, cultural, socio-political and other aspects is determined by the historical, cultural and world view differences between the two civilisations - Orthodox-traditional and Western (Protestant, Liberal). In addition, according to the author, today there are negative trends that are the reaction of Ukrainian society to a liberal-democratic socio-political model, which is a modification of the Protestant ideology.
