San Francisco of Betanzos. A disappeared architecture in the English Way of Santiago de Compostela

Abstract

The Franciscan monastery of Betanzos (La Coruña), which disappeared after Mendizabal´s Confiscation in 1835 ("Desamortización de Mendizabal"), had a highly artistic couplet column cloister which was dismantled in 1873. So in, this way began the destruction of one of the most important monasteries in Galicia. In this essay the first hypothesis of the first settlement in the XIV century is considered, as well as the analysis of a convent which had always been affected by the constant evolutions experimented by the town. This essay has been based on the examination and interpretation of the historical documents that have allowed the virtual reconstruction of this mendicant convent.
