¿Diezmo sobre los combustibles? Cabildo, Concejo y hacienda pública en el Burgos del Antiguo Régimen

Abstract

From the Middle Ages, the Chapter of the Cathedral of Burgos received portage for all fuels that were brought into the city, and which were essential to households, workshops, churches and schools, among other institutions. In the 18th century a dispute arose, regarding this tax, between the Chapter of the Cathedral, the City Council and Public Revenue. Dire needs on the one hand and the claim to immunity on the other gave rise to angry disputes as to who should control city supplies. The increase in income from the tax on fuel and in the amount of charcoal used in the Cathedral suggest a progressive cooling of temperatures, especially in the period known as the Dalton Minimum, which lasted from the end of the 17th century to the beginning of the 19th century.
