Abstract: This article discusses the theoretical aspects of biography in the historiographic debates regarding the possibilities of historical knowledge. Initially a movement on the uses and meanings of the biography in other temporalities is realized, next one shifts the look to the debates that made possible the "return of the biography" in years 1970. Until century XIX the biographies indicated the exemplary character of a life, from there, the question of "truth" and narrative put them in suspicion and rejection. The historiographical renewal movement of the 1970s and 1980s propose new debates about the role of individuals in historical changes and permanences, celebrating subjectivity and individuality. Currently the biographical projects seek to think the fragmentary and plural characteristic of an individual life and its role within the motor of history. keywords: Biography. History.
