CLINICAL OUTCOMES OF THE BI-PLANAR INTRAOCULAR LENS WITH IRIDOCAPSULAR FIXATION IN EYES WITH SEVERE ZONULAR DEFECTS
Abstract
Purpose. To evaluate functional outcomes of the bi-planar intraocular lens (IOL) of the RSP-3 design with iridocapsular fixation after cataract surgery in eyes with lens subluxation.Material and methods. Study included 31 eyes (31 patients) with lens subluxation. Mean age was 67.58±12.49 years. In all eyes a microincision cataract surgery was performed, where the bi-planar IOL of RSP-3 design («NEP Eye Microsurgery», Russia) was implanted and iridocapsular IOL fixation was achieved. Preoperative and postoperative examinations at the periods: 1 day, 1 week and 1 month consisted of biomicroscopy, uncorrected (UCVA) and best corrected (BCVA) visual acuity, refraction and intraocular pressure (IOP). According to the results there were calculated the safety factor and the efficiency factor.Results. At the follow-up period: 1 day, 1 week and 1month the mean UCVA and BCVA were 0.51±0.27; 0.44±0.28; 0.43±0.25 and 0.63±0.27; 0.68±0.27; 0.71±0.27, respectively; mean spherical equivalent values were -1.59±1.10D; -0.96±1.11D and -0.91±1.26D; mean IOP data were 20.87±10.06mmHg; 16.13±5.39mmHg and 16.48±3.90mmHg, respectively. The coefficients of safety and efficacy were 418 and 253, respectively by the end of the follow-up period. In 6 eyes with coexisting far-advanced glaucoma an IOP rise was observed from 25 to 55mmHg next day postoperatively. In 5 cases the IOP was normalized using hypotensive drops within 1 week and 1 patient underwent an additional laser treatment. No other adverse events were noticed.Conclusion. The study found a high safety and good functional results after cataract surgery and implantation of bi-planar IOL with iridocapsular fixation in eyes with severe zonular defects.
