The aim of the article is to analyze the legislative support for the development of medical institutions in the cities of the Right Bank of Ukraine in the second half of the XIX - early XX centuries. The general peculiarities of the development of urban medicine, the evolution of the legislative framework, the activities of city authorities in this area are investigated. It is noted that the establishment of local medical institutions contributed to the fact that the urban populations of the in the Right Bank of Ukraine was provided with professional medical care, however, the author concludes, the healthcare system in the period under review has not yet received a final organizational design. It is proved that the financial capabilities of local cities were quite limited. The only exception was Kyiv, where the exemplary Alexander’s Hospital operated. Most other city hospitals had a limited number of bed-places (an average of several dozen), the premises required serious repairs or construction of a new one. At the same time, the gradual spread of the latest treatments was organically combined with traditional.
