4th Russian Archaeological Congress in Kazan (1877): Archaeological Heritage Protection Issues

Abstract

The article analyzes the discussion of archaeological heritage protection during the 4th Russian Archaeological Congress in Kazan (1877). The author examines the public debate practice as part of the cultural heritage protection system. The main sources of the study are published minutes of sessions, lists of participants, the programme and regulations of the 4th Congress. The author concludes that the Congress was a significant stage of the development of archaeological sites protection around the Volga region and the common principles of cultural heritage protection in Russia.
