Familles, multiculturalisme et genre dans l’émirat d’Abou Dhabi : les apports des registres de naissances
Abstract
This research, conducted at a local scale, considers the Emirate of Abu Dhabi as a research laboratory for the study of the population in the region. In the recent years, the Emirate has implemented a policy of transparency by producing and diffusing statistical data. The access to the birth register offers an insight into the demographic dynamics of an heterogeneous and complex population, composed of the national Emirati population and a multiplicity of foreign communities. Following a critical assessment of the data set design, the paper discusses the issues of family formation, gender relations and multiculuralism, the latter being advocated by the Emirati society and institutions. This research was done in collaboration with Dr Bashir Aden from H.A.A.D. (Health Authority Abu Dhabi) ; we thank H.A.A.D. for granting us access to the birth register.
