PERFLUOROCARBON LIQUIDS FOR TAMPONADE OF VITREOUS CAVITY
Abstract
Vitreous cavity tamponade with perfluorocarbon liquids (PFCL) is commonly used in retinal detachment surgery. This article is a literature review describing the history of PFCL application, physical and chemical properties, experimental and clinical evaluation data on safety of long-term PFCL tamponade in the vitreous cavity. The literature review shows that PFCL negative effect on retina might be caused by the PFCL degree of purification. Thus, the data on PFCL purification may be extrapolated on the duration of PFCL vitreous cavity tamponade.
