Representation of the Selected Ukrainian and Ukrainian Studies’Materials in the Collection of the Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne: a Comparative Analysis in the Epochal Context
Abstract
The research is devoted to the representation of the Ukrainian and Ukrainian Studies’ materials in the Fonds of the Collection of the Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne. The study at first considers the unique material that has not been previously put into a separate system and has not been the object or subject of analysis. Printed and manuscript materials were processed and divided into several blocks. Ukrainian authors (both well-known and classical, as well as hypothetical or currently unknown) were studied, and the identities of Ukrainian readers were determined. The research chronological boundaries are the second half of the 19th century - the beginning of the 20th century. The rare editions of Taras Shevchenkоʼs poems, published in Geneva and in Ukraine, are considered. Various editions of works are studied, including attention to spelling. It has been noticed that there are discrepancies - including with modern editions of the Ukrainian classic. Particular attention is paid to the personality of Mykhailo Drahomanov as an enthusiast of Shevchenko studies and the founder of the Ukrainian diaspora in Switzerland. The correspondence of the printed text to the manuscripts (on the basis of which the collection was formed) is analyzed, interesting options are identified. A comparative analysis is proposed on the example of comparison with the publication of Viktor Domanytsky. The nation-building importance of Taras Shevchenkоʼs publications available in the BCUL. The two-volume “Encyclopedia of Ukrainian Studies”, which today can be considered a classic work, also has a nation-building goal. Geography of the analyzed publications: Switzerland, Germany, the USA, Ukraine. The article emphasizes the scientific approach of this publication. Thus, the analyzed sources are devoted to Ukrainian studies - both empirical and theoretical, and also have a practical purpose.
