The article focuses on Tanta gente, Mariana (1959) with the aim of analysing the ways in which the author, through the trajectories of the protagonists, contributes to designing a geography of subalternity feminine. Both the space and its inhabitants are mirrors of a hostile context that confines these women inexorably out of place. The eponymous novel and “A Menina Arminda”, in particular, provide a reflection on the deaf revolt of all those women who, escaping the pre-established paths, refuse to conform to the roles of wives, mothers and good housewives.
