According to the most recent studies, the ancient Benedictine monastic complex located in Badia Calavena, dedicated to the Saints Peter and Vito, has gradually been abandoned by the monastic community during the 14th Century. Some paintings in the complex contradict this hypothesis: through an accurate iconographic examination and a careful stylistic comparison, they can be dated to the second half of that Century and to the artistic language of the city area, especially to Turone di Maxio and Altichiero and their workshops. This paintings, including one in condition of partial palimpsest of fine aesthetic quality, prove that claustral structures have been used continuously. Painting stratification suggest that the monastery was reborn and consequently needed that representative spaces were appropriately decorated according to the most up-to-date artistic trends.
