The concept of variability in hormonal homeostasis has been well known for a long time, we have various examples in biological models of fluctuations or oscillations in hormone concentrations or their final effectors. Glycemic variability is a component of glucose homeostasis in conjunction with its hormonal and non-hormonal regulators. The GV is a measure of dispersion related to the standard deviation. When these dispersions or oscillations overcome homeostatic control barriers, they can cause pathophysiological alterations with clinical consequences, increasing the risk of vascular and neurocognitive complications, among others. To better understand this concept, we can compare it to a roller coaster and its many curves. The exposure time (duration of the trip) is correlated with the mean or average value, while the ups and downs with their dispersion or standard deviation. The result of dividing the DS over the mean x 100 gives us the value of VG.
