Novichoks and carbamates ‒ new chemical compounds added into the Chemical Weapons Convention

Abstract

This article presents a description of the modern nerve agents – Novichoks and carbamates – added to the Chemical Weapons Convention Schedules in 2019. The chemical structures of both groups of compounds are described, as well as their use cases and the regulations of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons on these compounds. Also, the ways of laboratory identification of the described compounds are presented, as well as the stationary and mobile analytical instruments used for this purpose.Keywords: Chemical Weapons Convention, chemical weapons, Chemical Warfare Agents, organophosphorus agents, Novichoks, carbamates
